ART THERAPY DEFINED Art therapy is an integrative mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by masters-level art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to meet personal goals and needs. ART THERAPY ACCESS PROGRAM - EXHIBIT Making Our Mark: A Creative Path for Change Art exhibit, Nov 2017 - March 2018 @ the Brooks, 1934 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN 38104 The Brooks Museum partnered with Juvenile Intervention and Faith-Based Follow-up (JIFF) for their second art therapy partnership in Fall 2017. Young men from JIFF came to the Brooks for eight group art therapy sessions to discover how art could help them explore and expand their understanding of self and community. This exhibition explores some of the art they created during these groups. Through gallery experiences, studio art making, and other reflective practices, the JIFF art therapy program offered a unique space for participants to express thoughts and feelings, identify strengths, and make positive choices. The creative processes and resulting group discussions assisted participants in seeing themselves and each other through varying – and perhaps new – lenses. Group members concluded the program by establishing personal and community goals and hopes, declaring, “We’re going to make it – we are making it!” For more information about the Brooks' Art Therapy Access Program, watch the video below and visit the Brooks website. ©2018. ART THERAPY ACCESS PROGRAM - EXHIBIT DiscoverME: Exploring Identity through Art Therapy Art exhibit, January - March 2015 @ the Brooks, 1934 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN 38104 From September to December of 2014, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art partnered with the Shelby County Schools’ Day Treatment Program as part of the museum’s Art Therapy Access Program. The collaboration included the creation of 3 art therapy groups – grades K-5 – that met once a week at a local school with Registered Art Therapist Paige Scheinberg. In addition, some group members attended a docent-led gallery tour of the museum’s Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt exhibit, followed by a museum art studio experiential. A selection of the resulting artwork is on display in this exhibit, presented in the order in which it was completed. I have loved art, creative, inspiring experiences, and helping others for as long as I can remember. I truly believe that art can help a person express, explore, and share thoughts, feelings, and self-stories in a way that words alone cannot. Engaging in an art process is often an experience of discovery, healing, and hope - despite any predefined or imagined limitations of age, gender, culture, or art ability. Working as an art therapist in medical hospitals, behavioral health hospitals, schools, community settings, and privately, I have facilitated art therapy groups, individual sessions, and assessments with all ages. (Fun Fact: My clients have ranged from 18 months to 106 years old!) While my art therapy practice is influenced by many theories and approaches, my approach to art therapy is greatly influenced by positive psychology (this approach is also known as Positive Art Therapy). As a result, my art therapy services and wellness arts-based workshops and classes often work towards exploring and enhancing (positive) emotions, engagement, (positive) relationships, meaning and purpose, and achievement and mastery. To learn more about my professional experience and training, please connect with me on LinkedIN or e-mail me. LET'S *SHINE ON* TOGETHER! Please don't hesitate to contact Paige with any questions you may have about art therapy and/or to discuss how art therapy might benefit you and/or your organization or program. Art therapy groups and workshops are now available for contracting. Please contact Paige with questions and requests. Art therapy is a relatively young field, so I'm frequently getting the opportunity to introduce art therapy to people for the first time! I am passionate about increasing the awareness and knowledge of the versatility and benefits of art therapy, as well as helping people learn more becoming an art therapist. Art therapy presentations, in-services, and experientials are now available for scheduling. Please contact Paige with questions and requests.
